Representation & Voice You have one — with backup Decisions made without your input

I have been a member of the Teamsters Union for just over 30 years, and a shop steward for 29 years. As a shop steward, I have always talked with business agents for the local. They listen, they advise, and they act. They hear what we say, and go to work for us. Even if sometimes you don’t like the answer, they will always be there to express your concerns to the employer. Teamsters 987 will always be there for its members, always strive for that balance of work/home life and do what they do best – ensure a safe and fair workplace, and give their members a voice.

FAQs

What is a union?

Can I join a union?

If you are an employee in this province, you can join a Union.

What are the advantages of a union?

A union allows all workers to have a voice in the workplace. It helps ensure access to a fair and safe working environment. By protecting your rights and working conditions, unions allow you to have better jobs and a more comfortable lifestyle.

Will my boss know that I signed a petition?

No, your employer is never made aware of who did or did not sign a petition. When an application for certification is submitted the Alberta Labour Relations Board Officer requests a list of names of all employees from your employer so the Board, not your employer, can verify employee support for the application. This ensures your employer has no knowledge of which employees signed petitions.

How much are union dues?

Union dues are calculated by multiplying your hourly rate of pay by 2.5 and adding $2 to that number. For example, if your hourly rate of pay is $20/hour your dues would be: $20×2.5=$50 $50+$2=$52/month for Union dues
